Reflecting on Blogging

Dear Students,

During this semester of English 1010, I have asked you to blog because I speculated that it would have pedagogical benefit, which means that I thought certain course goals could be achieved or augmented by your participation in an online public forum in which ideas are discussed by the wider community. Some of you have embraced this opportunity and have written thoughtful and thought-provoking entries which have helped your readers to better understand your positions on certain issues; in these cases, your writing has often been inspired and inspiring, causing me to see a side of an issue I had not considered before. On the other hand, some of you have simply created the entries because they were required, and your writing for the blog displays no special insight and conveys your ideas in a rather lackluster tone, giving your reader(s) little to contemplate. Given this diversity of responses to the blog, I would like for you to reflect on your participation in the blog.

In order to consider your participation, I would like you to answer all of the following questions in a paragraph or two. Here's the list of questions:

1. Do you think the blog has had an effect on your writing for English 1010 or any other class? If so, how has it? If not, why do you think it hasn't had a positive or negative impact on your writing?

2. Before you answered the blog each time, did you read my entry carefully? Did you read others' entries to see if your opinion had been expressed already? Did this reading have any effect on how you chose to answer the blog? If you did not read others' writing, why didn't you?

3. Did you learn anything from the blog that you did not know already?

4. Do you think blogging is a good activity for English 1010 students to be required to do? If so, why? If not, why not?

5. How would you change the blog to make it a better and more useful experience for English 1010 students?

6. Finally, if you were going to tell one of my future English 1010 students what to expect from doing the blog, what would you say?

I appreciate your participation in this experiment with the blog and encourage further commentary from you if you are so inclined.

Happy Holidays!
Ms. O

1. I don't think that the blog has had an effect on my writing but it was enjoyable.

2. I read the entries semi carfefully before posting each blog ...i did somewhat skim...and i glanced at others responses just to see if my ideas were repetitve so that i could give new infomation.

3. One thing i learned was about the genocide. I don't like the news because it makes me sad so i wasnt aware that that was taking place.

4. I don't think it hurts to have the blog as a requirement, but i guess that is just because personally i enjoy blogging. I have my own. I think it should stay in the English 1010 class because it is an easy, enjoyable assignment.

5. I would change the blog only to make it more frequent because we didn't do many at all.

6. The blog was fun and easy and a good way to gain information about whats going on in class and around the world.

Yes, blogging opinions aside- they have helped my papers in that they pushed me to think about the question being asked and I had a chance to see other students' responses. For the most part, I read the question and a few of the opinions, due to time limitations. The blogs have given me sides to things I did not see before. So yes- I did learn new things. Blogging seems to be more of an extra credit kind of thing instead of a requirement, maybe because it's unorthodox. But I see no problem in making it a requirement. I think plenty of people from class didn't know how to blog correctly (I had a hard time logging in, the page wouldn't show up sometimes, I see plenty of "anonymous" loggers maybe due to that). I would tell future students to expect very broadly given questions and would tell them to read in a global style.

1. I don’t think that it impacted my writing all that much, but it did help me with proofreading (you know before everyone SEES the mistakes!).

2. Of, course. I did read others’ blogs before I answered, and I appreciated hearing their views. I had some similar thoughts, but I had no problems showing my indifference to some of them.

3. Yes, I did learn something from the blog. Initially, I learned how to do one, and I thought it was a really fun, modern way to take a stand on topics that are important to our generation.

4. Yes, do it. Blogging kind of makes college students want to actually DO their work. It’s just more fun to do it on the computer, rather than discussing it. Also, it introduces students to a new kind of communication.

5. I like the blog and I don’t think that I would change it. It’s fun!

6. Make sure that you know how to use it….and try to pick a random username…you know one that you have to write down and check, every time you go to do the blog. Proofread it before you submit.

No I do not feel the blogging has helped or improved my writing in any way. THe only thing I view or think of the blogging is part of the grade. I did not read other peoples blogs because I did not want their opinions or words going through my mind as I was writing. I feel you wanted my response not mine combined with what I agreed on with others and following there mind set. No i did not learning anything from this. It is a good outside homework project because students can do this homework from anywhere and it is writing related. I would make the blog a two part process in which first step a deadline for everyoneto enter an opinion and then second students write a paragraph or so on what they get from reading other peoples opinions on the topic. I would tell a future student its homework.

I don't know if blogging has helped my actual writing, but I think it has helped me appreciate other people's thoughts. It definitely hasn't had a negative affect on my writing, though. I would read through your blog at least two times to make sure I knew I wasn't about to say something totally off the subject and I would read other people's comments to see how many other people felt the same as I did. I think what I learned was more about how other people have seen the world. I think it is very interesting to see things from another point of view. I'm not sure about blogging being a good exercise because I get very distracted and want to see something different which makes me lose focus. I might have made the blogs shorter so it wouldn't be so hard to focus on the matter at hand. I am going to tell future students to be ready to hear a lot of different views and to be ready to voice their views without being too pushy.

I believe the blogging exercise has dramatically impacted my writing. When answering a blog I am able to easily express my opinions in an effective manner. The blogs have helped me to brainstorm ideas on a personal level; instead of being compelled to write about an uninteresting topic. Before I answered each blog, I carefully read what the teacher posted so that I can properly answer the question. Before I would write my blog, I read a few other entries from classmates, but this did not affect my response; however, sometimes I commented (or expound upon) on peer’s writings.
The writing exercises have shown me the varying viewpoints my classmates have on numerous topics. I found out new information around our world, such as the havoc occurring in Sudan. It is very interesting to read other’s responses to the serious situation. Since blogging has had such a positive impact on my writing, I believe you should continue the writing exercise for future English 1010 students. Blogging helps students get acquainted with their peers, by examining their classmate’s views and opinions.
To change the blog I would post a series of questions, like this blog, and ask the students to choose one question and write a two-paragraph response; instead of having one primary question (or topic). To encourage future 1010 students to engage in the blog, I will point out the beneficial feedback a person receives from reading the various writings. The blog is a fun way to receive daily credit and it can aid in boosting grades if people are prompt in finishing the blog by the deadline. Overall, I promote the blog for future English 1010 students because of the interaction one receives with other students (and the teacher) and I believe a person’s writing can develop in a positive way.

Over the course of the semester I do not think that the blog has had an effect on my writing for this class, along with any other classes. When it comes to writing for the blog, I will admit I am one of the people who are just doing it because I have to. I normally just write what comes to my mind and do not think too much into mechanics like I should. When it comes to pre-blogging I normally do read others thoughts then I answer it for myself. The reading of others helps me have a better understand of a response, also it helps me better understand the topic. Some of the topics I did not have a strong background of information and others opinions helped. Over the semester I did learn some stuff from the blogs. I had no idea about the Genocides, along with poverty issues. The blog helped me better understand the problems going on in the world today.

When asked if the blog helps me, I think it all depends on the student. For me the blog is just another thing I have to worry about doing before class. I do not think it should be required, some students may like do blog, and write about today’s events and with that I think if anything the blog should be an optional, maybe extra credit, grade. If I would to recommend changes to the blog I would make if not have to be required. I think the set up is easy to follow and if anything maybe you can have a student pick the topic that we discuss, instead of the teacher all the time. I think if the student can relate to it more, you might have better and more efficient responses. Finally, for the future students of 1010 I would say expect to write on topics you may care nothing about or that you may agree with completely, however; no matter what just do it because it can help your grade in the end.
